Anthurium BVIT × Night Dragon

Anthurium BVIT × Night Dragon is a dark foliage hybrid combining Black Velvet Indo Type genetics with Night Dragon. This cross is known for producing velvety foliage, deep mature coloration, strong leaf shapes, and beautifully colored emergent growth.

New leaves can emerge in bronze, copper, red, or muted burgundy tones before gradually darkening as they harden. Mature foliage develops into deeper shades of green with a smooth velvet appearance, while reddish petioles and venation can add even more contrast.

Because this is a hybrid cross, individual plants can develop their own combination of characteristics as they mature, making the progression from juvenile to mature foliage especially interesting.

What You’ll Receive

One live Anthurium BVIT × Night Dragon plant.

Your plant will be carefully packed to help protect the foliage, root system, and active growing point during transit.

Plant Highlights

Dark velvety foliage

Bronze to reddish emergent leaves

Deep green mature coloration

Potential for contrasting red or pink toned venation

Elongated heart shaped foliage

Strong dark Anthurium genetics

Leaf shape and coloration continue developing with maturity

Light

Provide medium to bright indirect light.

Bright filtered light encourages steady growth, stronger coloration, and healthy leaf development. Avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest part of the day, as velvet Anthurium foliage can scorch.

Water

Water thoroughly once the upper portion of the growing media begins to dry.

Keep the root zone consistently lightly moist without allowing it to remain constantly saturated. Allow excess water to drain freely after each watering.

Avoid repeated periods of complete dryness, particularly while the plant is actively producing new foliage.

Humidity

Moderate to high humidity is preferred.

Humidity around 60 percent or higher can encourage smoother leaf emergence and help developing foliage expand without damage.

Higher humidity is particularly beneficial while new leaves are unfurling and expanding.

Growing Media

Use a chunky, airy, well draining Anthurium mix that retains moisture while allowing plenty of oxygen around the roots.

A combination of tree fern fiber, orchid bark, coco chips, pumice, perlite, and coco coir works well.

Avoid dense growing media that remains saturated for extended periods.

Temperature

Warm temperatures are ideal, generally around 65 to 85°F.

Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged exposure to temperatures below approximately 55°F.

Consistent warmth generally encourages stronger root development and more regular leaf production.

Airflow

Provide gentle airflow, particularly when growing in elevated humidity.

Good circulation helps prevent stagnant moisture around the foliage and growing media while still allowing the plant to benefit from humid conditions.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly and consistently during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer.

Regular light feeding can help support healthy roots and progressively larger foliage.

Periodically flushing the growing media can help prevent fertilizer salts from accumulating around the roots.

Growth Habit

Anthurium BVIT × Night Dragon develops in an upright growth pattern with new foliage emerging from a central stem.

As the plant matures, successive leaves can become larger, darker, and more defined. Mature characteristics may take several leaves to fully develop, particularly when plants are still juvenile.

Emergent Color

One of the standout characteristics of this cross is its new growth.

Fresh leaves may emerge bronze, reddish, copper, or burgundy before gradually transitioning toward their mature coloration. The exact shade and intensity can vary from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant.

Allow new leaves to completely harden before judging their final color.

About BVIT

BVIT is commonly used as shorthand for Black Velvet Indo Type, a trade designation associated with dark velvet Anthuriums originating from Indonesian breeding rather than one single standardized clone.

Because BVIT × Night Dragon is a hybrid cross, seedlings can show variation in leaf shape, sinus, venation, emergent color, and mature darkness. That variation is part of what makes watching these plants mature so interesting.

Anthurium BVIT × Night Dragon combines dark velvet foliage with colorful emergents and strong contrasting tones, becoming increasingly dramatic as the plant develops its mature characteristics.
