Drynaria rigidula

Drynaria rigidula is an impressive tropical epiphytic fern known for its bold, deeply divided green fronds and distinctive creeping rhizome. Unlike a typical terrestrial fern, Drynaria naturally grows attached to trees and other surfaces, giving it a dramatic, architectural growth habit that looks especially good mounted, in baskets, or allowed to spread naturally from a pot.

As the plant matures, it develops two different types of fronds. The larger fertile fronds extend outward and create the plant's lush tropical appearance, while shorter basal fronds form around the rhizome. These basal fronds eventually age and turn brown but remain an important natural part of the plant, helping collect moisture and organic material around the root system.

Drynaria rigidula is native from parts of southern China and Southeast Asia through Australia and the southwestern Pacific, where it grows primarily as an epiphyte in wet tropical environments.

Light

Bright indirect light or filtered light is ideal. It can tolerate some gentle morning sun but should be protected from intense afternoon sun, particularly when grown in warmer climates.

Water

Water thoroughly and allow the plant to approach slight dryness between waterings without allowing the rhizome and root system to remain completely dry for extended periods. Mounted specimens will generally need to be watered more frequently than plants grown in containers.

Good drainage is important. While Drynaria enjoys moisture, constantly saturated conditions around the rhizome can encourage rot.

Humidity

Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Around 60 percent humidity or higher will help encourage strong frond development and healthy new growth.

Established plants can adapt to somewhat lower humidity when watering and airflow are managed appropriately.

Growing Media

Use a very airy, fast draining mix. Orchid bark, tree fern fiber, coco chips, sphagnum moss, perlite, pumice, and similar coarse materials can all work well.

The goal is to provide moisture around the roots while maintaining plenty of oxygen and drainage.

Drynaria rigidula can also be mounted onto cork, wood, tree fern panels, or other suitable surfaces and grown similarly to other epiphytic ferns.

Temperature

Warm temperatures are preferred, generally around 65 to 85°F.

Protect from frost and extended cold temperatures. Growth will typically slow considerably when temperatures drop.

Airflow

Good airflow is especially important when growing this plant in high humidity. Gentle air movement helps the rhizome dry appropriately between waterings and reduces the chance of stagnant conditions.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly during active growth using a diluted balanced fertilizer. A light feeding every few weeks during the warmer growing season is generally sufficient.

Avoid heavy fertilizer applications directly against the rhizome.

Growth Habit

Drynaria rigidula grows from a creeping rhizome that gradually travels across its growing surface. New fronds emerge along the rhizome as the plant establishes and expands.

Because of this growth habit, giving the plant room to spread will allow it to develop into a much more impressive specimen over time.

About the Brown Basal Fronds

One of the most important things to know about Drynaria is that the brown basal or shield fronds are completely normal.

These specialized fronds naturally turn brown and papery as they mature. They should generally be left attached rather than removed. In nature, they help create a protected area around the rhizome that catches leaf litter, moisture, and nutrients.

A mature Drynaria rigidula has an incredible layered appearance with its creeping rhizome, brown basal fronds, and large green fertile fronds growing together.
