Huperzia ‘Nang Kali Sida’ is a distinctive tropical tassel fern grown for its long cascading stems, dense foliage, and dramatic mature form. As the plant establishes, the stems gradually lengthen and branch, creating a layered curtain of growth that is especially attractive when displayed from a hanging basket or elevated position.

Like other tropical Huperzia, ‘Nang Kali Sida’ is best grown with warm temperatures, consistent moisture, high humidity, and plenty of airflow around its epiphytic root system.

Foliage

The foliage develops densely along the stems, creating a full and highly textured appearance.

New growth typically emerges a brighter green before deepening in color as it matures. The leaves remain closely arranged along the stems, emphasizing the plant’s long trailing structure.

As the plant gains maturity, repeated branching creates a fuller specimen with multiple cascading growth points.

Avoid repeatedly handling the stems, especially fresh growth, since developing Huperzia foliage can be easily damaged.

Growth Habit

Humidity

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are approximately 65–82°F.

Warm, stable temperatures encourage active growth.

Protect the plant from prolonged temperatures below approximately 55°F.

Growth naturally slows when temperatures decrease, so watering and fertilizer should also be reduced during cooler periods.

Growing Media

Use a loose, moisture-retentive epiphytic mix with excellent airflow.

Long-fiber sphagnum moss works especially well.

Other suitable ingredients can include:

Fine orchid bark
Perlite
Tree fern fiber
Loose coco chips
Sphagnum moss

The media should hold enough moisture to prevent the fine roots from drying rapidly while still allowing oxygen throughout the root zone.

Avoid dense standard potting soil or heavily compacted media.

Potting and Mounting

Hanging baskets are ideal for Huperzia ‘Nang Kali Sida’.

A basket allows the stems to cascade naturally while providing good airflow around the crown and roots.

The plant can also be mounted using sphagnum moss around the root system.

Mounted specimens create a very natural appearance but will generally dry much faster than plants grown in baskets.
