Huperzia nummulariifolia is one of the most distinctive trailing Huperzia, known for its long cascading stems covered in tightly overlapping, rounded leaves. The foliage has an almost scaled or braided appearance, with each small leaf hugging the stem and creating the dense texture that makes this species instantly recognizable.
As the plant matures, the stems continue to elongate and branch, eventually producing an impressive curtain of trailing growth. Its compact foliage makes it visually very different from the more feathery or outward-facing growth seen on species such as Huperzia squarrosa.
Native across a broad area of tropical Asia and the western Pacific, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, the Philippines, Indonesia and New Guinea, Huperzia nummulariifolia naturally grows as an epiphyte in wet tropical forests. This means it is adapted to growing attached to trees rather than in heavy soil, making airflow around the root system especially important.
Light: Bright indirect light. A small amount of gentle morning sun is generally well tolerated, but avoid prolonged harsh direct sunlight.
Water: Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged. This species does not appreciate being allowed to dry completely for extended periods.
Humidity: High humidity is preferred. Around 60% or higher is ideal, particularly when combined with consistent airflow.
