Platycerium Omo ‘Polar Bear’

Second picture is of parentage

Platycerium Omo ‘Polar Bear’ is a striking hybrid selected for its exceptionally pale, heavily silvered foliage and compact growth habit. Omo originates from Platycerium willinckii × diversifolium, with diversifolium itself involving bifurcatum × hillii, giving ‘Polar Bear’ characteristics from several familiar Platycerium lineages.

The defining feature of ‘Polar Bear’ is the dense coating of white trichomes covering the fertile fronds. Mature foliage can appear almost frosted or powdery white, giving the plant its name.

Shield Fronds
Shield fronds develop around the base of the plant and gradually overlap the mounting surface as the plant matures.

Fresh shields emerge green and eventually age to tan or brown. This browning is completely natural and older shield fronds should generally remain attached.

The shields help protect the roots, retain moisture around the mounting material, and create the layered structure characteristic of mature Platycerium.

Fertile Fronds
The fertile fronds are the standout feature of ‘Polar Bear’.

They develop broad, substantial growth with branching toward the tips while maintaining a relatively compact overall form compared with many willinckii types.

As the plant matures, the fertile fronds can become wider and more dramatic while maintaining their distinctive pale silver coloration. ‘Polar Bear’ was specifically selected from Omo plants for its compact form and exceptionally dense white surface hairs.

Coloration
The foliage can range from pale mint green to intensely silver white depending on maturity, growing conditions, and light exposure.

The white appearance comes from a dense covering of protective hairs called trichomes.

These trichomes help protect the foliage from intense light and moisture loss and should never be rubbed, wiped, or scrubbed from the fronds.

Brighter filtered light can encourage a noticeably whiter appearance, while plants grown under lower light may produce greener foliage.

Light
Provide bright filtered light.

‘Polar Bear’ benefits from relatively strong light because it encourages compact growth and helps maintain the heavy silver coloration.

Excellent options include:

Bright indirect indoor light
Filtered greenhouse light
Gentle morning sun
Bright outdoor shade

Avoid intense unfiltered afternoon sun, particularly when the plant is transitioning from lower-light conditions.

Water
Water thoroughly and allow the mounting material to partially dry before watering again.

When mounted in sphagnum, completely saturate the moss so the interior of the root area receives water rather than only wetting the surface.

As the plant becomes larger and develops multiple shield layers, the center of the mount may stay moist considerably longer than the outside.

Check the moss before watering rather than following a strict schedule.

Avoid keeping the root area constantly saturated.

Humidity
‘Polar Bear’ performs especially well around 60–80% humidity.

Higher humidity supports developing fertile fronds and helps reduce crispy edges, particularly while new growth is expanding.

It can adapt to somewhat lower humidity when watering and airflow are properly balanced.

Airflow
Provide consistent gentle airflow.

Good air movement is particularly important when combining high humidity with sphagnum moss.

The goal is moist, humid air around the foliage while still allowing the root area to gradually dry after watering.

Avoid stagnant conditions around the growing point.

Temperature
Ideal temperatures are approximately 68–85°F.

Warm, stable temperatures encourage active growth.

Protect the plant from prolonged temperatures below approximately 55–60°F, and never expose it to frost or freezing conditions.

Growing Media
Long-fiber sphagnum moss is an excellent mounting medium.

The moss should hold moisture while remaining loose enough for air to reach the roots.

Avoid packing sphagnum extremely tightly around the root system.

Mounting
‘Polar Bear’ is exceptionally well suited to mounting and becomes increasingly impressive as its shields begin covering the board.

Wood boards, cork, tree fern panels, and moisture-resistant synthetic mounting boards can all work well.

Leave enough space around a young plant for future shields to expand.

Secure the root mass firmly enough that the plant cannot shift while new roots establish, but avoid crushing the growing point.

Growth Habit
Compact to moderate growing compared with many larger willinckii hybrids.

‘Polar Bear’ was selected particularly for its tighter growth habit combined with broad, heavily silvered fertile fronds. As it matures, the plant develops a dense layered appearance rather than producing extremely long, loose growth.

Feeding
Feed lightly during active growth.

A balanced fertilizer diluted to approximately ¼ strength can be applied periodically during watering.

Regular light feeding is preferable to strong fertilizer applications.

Reduce feeding during cooler periods or whenever growth slows significantly.

Pups
Established plants may eventually produce pups around the base.

These can be left attached to create a larger specimen or separated once they have developed their own roots and several established fronds.

Best Growing Conditions

Bright filtered light
60–80% humidity
68–85°F temperatures
Consistent airflow
Thorough watering followed by partial drying
Loose, airy sphagnum moss
Strong light to encourage heavier silver coloration

Additional Notes
The heavy white coating is one of the most important characteristics of Platycerium Omo ‘Polar Bear’. Avoid handling the fertile fronds more than necessary because the trichomes can be permanently removed by rubbing.

As the plant matures, expect the foliage to become broader, whiter, and increasingly sculptural, making ‘Polar Bear’ especially striking as a mounted specimen.
