Platycerium willinckii 'OMG'
Platycerium willinckii ‘OMG’
Platycerium willinckii ‘OMG’ is a distinctive dwarf selection of the Java staghorn fern known for its compact proportions, short and broad fertile fronds, dense branching, and highly sculptural mature form. Rather than producing the long, flowing antlers associated with standard Platycerium willinckii, ‘OMG’ concentrates its growth into a much smaller area, creating an exceptionally full and intricate specimen.
The fertile fronds are one of the defining characteristics of ‘OMG’. They remain relatively short and wide before repeatedly dividing toward the tips, producing numerous compact fingers. As successive fronds develop, they can overlap and layer around one another, giving mature plants a dense, almost three-dimensional appearance.
This congested growth is what gives ‘OMG’ much of its personality. Even a relatively small mature specimen can appear exceptionally developed because so much branching is packed into a compact crown.
‘OMG’ is considered a dwarf form of Platycerium willinckii. Mature dwarf willinckii generally remain only a fraction of the size of standard forms, making them particularly attractive for growers who enjoy highly developed specimens but do not have room for the enormous fertile fronds produced by full-size willinckii.
Shield Fronds: Compact and closely layered around the growing point. New shields emerge green and gradually mature before naturally aging to tan or brown. Successive shields can build on one another over time, creating an increasingly substantial base around the plant.
Fertile Fronds: Short, broad and heavily forked. Instead of extending into long pendulous ribbons, the fertile fronds remain comparatively compact and divide into numerous short branches, producing the dense silhouette characteristic of ‘OMG’.
Size: Dwarf. ‘OMG’ remains substantially smaller than standard Platycerium willinckii while still developing the mature structure and branching associated with the species.
Growth Habit: Compact, congested and highly branched. Mature plants develop a dense crown rather than a long cascading form.
Coloration: Green to silvery green. Like other willinckii, the foliage develops a coating of fine natural trichomes that can produce a beautiful silver or frosted appearance, particularly under bright growing conditions.
Light: Bright indirect to very bright filtered light is ideal. Strong filtered light encourages compact development and can enhance the silvery appearance of the foliage. Gentle morning sun can be beneficial once acclimated, but harsh afternoon sunlight should be avoided.
Water: Water thoroughly, then allow the sphagnum or mounting material to partially dry before watering again. Platycerium willinckii generally prefers a noticeable wet-to-drier cycle rather than remaining constantly saturated.
Because ‘OMG’ grows so densely, avoid keeping the center of the plant continuously wet. Allowing some drying between waterings helps maintain healthy roots and crown growth.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity is preferred. Approximately 50 to 80% works well when paired with consistent airflow.
Airflow: Good airflow is especially important for ‘OMG’. Its tightly arranged fronds and compact crown can retain moisture more readily than open-growing forms, so moving air around the plant is beneficial.
Temperature: Warm to moderately warm conditions are preferred. Approximately 65 to 85°F is a comfortable range for active growth. Protect from frost, prolonged cold, and especially cold conditions combined with a saturated root mass.
Growing Media: Use a loose, airy epiphytic medium. Sphagnum moss is commonly used when mounting but should not be packed excessively tightly around the roots. The goal is to provide moisture retention while still allowing oxygen to reach the root system.
Mounting: Mounting is highly recommended. Because of its dwarf growth, ‘OMG’ can develop into a mature-looking specimen on a relatively compact board, making it particularly well suited for wall displays or collections containing multiple mounted Platycerium.
Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer. Frequent weak feeding is generally preferable to heavy fertilizer applications. Periodically flushing the mounting material with clean water can help prevent excess salts from accumulating.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. Dwarf Platycerium often take time to establish and develop their characteristic mature structure. Growth may appear especially slow while the plant is young, but the dense branching becomes increasingly apparent with maturity.
Maintenance: Intermediate. The plant itself remains compact, but careful watering and good airflow are important because of its congested growth habit.
Best Display: Mounted vertically where the compact shield structure and dense fertile fronds can be appreciated from the front and sides. Its smaller footprint also makes it an excellent choice for displaying alongside larger Platycerium cultivars.
Additional Notes: The silver or white coating found on the foliage consists of natural trichomes rather than dust or residue. These fine hairs help protect the plant from intense light and moisture loss and should not be wiped or rubbed from the fronds.
Young plants may not immediately show the exaggerated short, broad and heavily forked appearance associated with mature ‘OMG’. The cultivar's characteristic form becomes progressively more noticeable as the plant gains maturity and begins producing successive generations of fertile fronds.
Platycerium willinckii ‘OMG’ stands out from standard willinckii through its miniature proportions and exceptionally concentrated growth. Its short, broad antlers divide repeatedly into a dense mass of sculptural foliage, creating the appearance of a highly mature staghorn fern in a surprisingly small footprint.
For growers who enjoy dwarf Platycerium, ‘OMG’ offers an especially dramatic combination of compact size, dense branching and classic willinckii character.
